MTU vs. NMU Scrimmage 2022

Boats waiting ready at the start line, third wave of the day.

It all started when…

The teeth-chattering September weather and waves didn’t stop Michigan Tech from facing off against Northern Michigan University and MTU Crew Alumni and Friends on September 24th. In a short 4-kilometer race heading east from the Houghton-Hancock Bridge, boats faced high waves, rain, and many late penalties in preparation for this season’s big regattas. At the end of the showdown, Northern surprised Michigan Tech with adorable paper plate medals to commemorate the shindig. MTU Crew is very thankful for everyone who showed up to row hard, cheer on boats, and facilitate the scrimmage! A special thank you to Parry’s mother for officiating the event <3

Notable performances:

Alumni + Friends: Morgan and Caitlin’s double performance (17:48.55) in the first wave beat the rest of the competition. In the third wave, Parry Ragland and Tim Wong competed in their speedy double (14:18.18) - keeping up with the alum/varsity 8+ coxxed by Morgan and simultaneously smashing all other competition!

Michigan Tech: MTU’s 8+ consistently inched past Northern’s 8+. In their first race, the 8+ slammed Northern by just under 2 minutes (18:36.05) and skimmed past by only 5 seconds difference (19:25.26) in the second go! The MTU 4+ consistently beat their reasonable competition in all 3 waves, with Abigail Ruthenberg, Sophia Brylinski, Michele Reinke, Greta Rickauer, and Anni Betz (cox) defeating the MTU 8+ in the first wave (17:56.99). Sebastian Adams, Brian Reeves, Owen Davis, Aaron Kemnitz, and Elena Gill (cox) sped in the MTU 4+ (18:27.13) past both MTU’s 8+ and Northern’s 8+ by just less than a minute in the second wave. In the third wave, MTU’s 4+ (18:37.32), consisting of Jayden Chow, Zachary Hooper, Nathan Mertens, Jacob Heeringa, and Elena Gill (cox) overcame both Northern’s 8+ and the MTU Novice Women’s 4+.

Northern Michigan: With the exception of the first wave, the Northern 8+ managed to avoid last place by the skin of their teeth. In the second wave, Northern (19:37.41) beat MTU Alum’s double. Northern (20:08.71) also beat the MTU Novice Women’s 4+ by over 2 minutes in the third wave. All participants in the regatta were very thankful for Northern 8’s cox, who singlehandedly provided quality humor, awesome one-liners, and excellent commentary for the day.
